Taking Small Sustainable Steps: Helping You Repair, Reuse, Grow Your Own

If I’m actually serious about living intentionally, it’s got to be more than good ideas.

Creative, fuel-free modes of transport, growing my own tomatoes, buying from brands that care well for their employees… I find the concept of sustainable living an exciting and all-encompassing one. It’s something that I feel has been on my mind for a long time. Even as a sweet-young-thing, Yours Truly caught the dream in small ways: I loved the thought of eating the veggies that grew in our garden; I watched my dad use precise draughtsmanship to dream up energy efficient changes for our home; I was diligent in my primary school recycling program. I’m sure my childhood experiences helped to feed my interest.

Sustainable living goes beyond hobbies and interests though. If I’m actually serious about living intentionally, it’s got to be more than good ideas. I need to decide how it’s going to be part of my daily life and take some kind of achievable step towards that. I wrote about my experiment with Plastic Free July here, which was an incredibly helpful step in that direction. If I’m honest though, it takes a lot of perseverance to continue! I find inspiration and encouragement from others very effective in re-focussing my own small steps.

So saying, I am thrilled to see changes in the way we think about sustainability creeping into our communal consciousness. More than ever, local councils and community groups are helping us to “skill-up” through workshops or advertising events that help link us with like-minded people in our own ‘hood.

I was inspired looking at some of the events that are coming up in the next few weeks and wanted to share them with you, to play my own part in encouraging small-step sustainability. The list below includes the local council areas where my friends and family live in Sydney. I would love to know what other things are happening in your town or city in November!
